I’m angry. This piece of shit, Luca Santino, thinks he can get away with upsetting my precious Bridgette? Well, he’s got another thing coming. My heartbeat is slow, as it typically is, but my mind is racing.

I wait for the bouncers to leave, along with the waitresses and the other whores. I sit in my car, playing music from the radio. I have always liked having a soundtrack to my night, and nothing is more fitting than ‘Everything I Own’ by Bread.

When the coast is clear, I leave my car, and make my way through the alleyway. I look down at where the body of last night’s victim lay. I didn’t go for the kill on that bum, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was dead anyway.

Luca’s car’s parked outside the backdoor, leading into The Cathouse. On nights like this, where he’s too drunk to drive, he stays in a few extra hours, napping in his office. Being the meticulous planner I am I know this door is unlocked. The staff usually forget about it, or maybe they just don’t care enough to check.

I enter a service room and make my way out to the front. A few lights are still on, exposing a sticky floor, a glitter-filled stage, and empty tables with chairs stacked on top. A light shines from an office above a narrow staircase. I can hear Luca Santino doing his best Frank Sinatra impression, drunken hiccups ruining the song.

He’s up and down in the office. I pull a barstool off the counter, and take a seat, knowing he’ll come out of the office, soon enough.

After his terrible rendition of Fly Me to the Moon, Luca steps onto the staircase. He doesn’t see me at first, as I’m in a dark corner at the end of the bar. My eyes never break contact with him.

He reaches the bottom of the staircase and walks to the bar. He has a can of beer in one hand. I guess the privilege of owning the place gives him free rein on the supplies. I shift on the stool, and his attention falls on me. His eyes widen.

“What the hell are you doing here? The Cathouse is closed, chump,” Luca says.

I get up from my chair, and make my way towards him. I don’t say anything, just sussing him up as I walk.

“There’s a gun in the top drawer of your desk, upstairs. Were you smart enough to bring it down?” I ask.

“How do you know that?” Luca asks. He doesn’t reach for a gun from behind his back, nor does he attempt to make any threats. He sets the empty beer can down on the bar counter, and goes behind it.

“If you’re looking for the revolver, tucked behind the cash register, you’ll find it where you left it,” I say, tucking my hand beneath the back of my black jacket. I grip the handle of a baton. With a single flick of my wrist, the length extends one-and-a-half feet.

It’s my business to know everything.
